Lewis Latimer perfected the light bulb filament so that bulbs would burn brighter and last longer. This led him to be hired as the only black scientist with Thomas Edison's elite Edison Pioneers. Ernest Just became an authority on reproductive cells through his work in cell biology and division. Percy Julian developed numerous drugs and chemicals, many from soybeans, that were used for everything from fire-fighting to treating glaucoma. Charles Drew, who developed the first practical method for storing blood in a blood bank. His pioneering work created the blood banks used to treat wounded allied solders in WWII.
